EQUAL STONES " Below Zero "

Schaap creates an impressive, tangible sense of forbidden place that is desolate and ominous..TONESHIFT

more reviews

From the perennial layers of the permafrost, Glacial Movements brings out the music of the talented Dutch artist Amandus Schaap aka Equal Stones. From the first experimental outing - exploring the possibilities of production work in 2012's "Temporal Displacement", the project Equal Stones has always been about getting to know the hidden places within the subconscious. Progressing over the years and finding a consistent stylistic sound on the two LP's "Transgression" and "Hans of a Murderer" the project turned towards very textural induced drone ambient, in which it's still firmly rooted. With "Below Zero", the first sittings of writing and producing were specifically designed for Glacial Movements. The record is icy cold, thickly layered with textures - reminiscent of heavy, slow moving, glacial scenery.A dark, sometimes brooding atmosphere combines these elements into an intense ride which was masterfully mastered by Rafael Anton Irisarri, further accentuating the cold textures.

Line Spectrum is the new project by Oleg Puzan from Ukraine, who also released some excellent works on the Cryo Chamber label as Dronny Darko. Line Spectrum is a sound art project that is created to expand sonic boundaries through sound manipulations, often in a form of severe minimalism using a vast palette of microscopic sounds forming an immersive auditory monsoon. Slowly evolving textures mixed with field recordings and synthesized particles suits as a perfect perception environment for a listener. His works often reflect the state of tranquility through blending together deep ambiences, musique concrète, avant-garde elements and silence.Line Spectrum’s compositions require focused listening and is often best experienced on using hight quality headphones.

Bruma is an album of exploration. Somewhere cold and safe. Where nature is pure and expands as far as the eyes can see. Immersive drones combined with textured particles and field recording pieces create a place to dissolve in.

The year 2013 was very important for the recording career of the founder and artistic director of Glacial Movements, Alessandro Tedeschi aka Netherworld. 2013 represented the release of the album "Alchemy of Ice”, which received many positive reviews the music press internationally. In the following years the artist from Rome signed another work "Zastrugi" (2015) for the label’s Iceberg series devoted to techno / dub. Subsequently there was the album "Himuro" (2017), composed with Eraldo Bernocchi, musician and soundtrack composer, known for his work in the electronic music field and the European post-industrial music scene. So after a break of 6 years, Netherworld returns to publish the new ambient solo work: "Algida Bellezza". The source of inspiration refers to an event long awaited by the artist but far from the glacial themes; the birth of his daughter in November 2015. This work is completely dedicated to her. A very strong emotional impulse led the artist to compose the textures of the five songs on the album. The soundscapes were composed mainly during the night whilst the little princess was cradled in the arms of her dad. Only one instrument was used - the Roland VP9000 connected with a multi-effect rack. The tracks of the songs were then entrusted to the sound engineer and friend Matteo Spinazzè Savaris, who in addition to performing the final mixing and mastering, was also co-producer of the disc. Video directed by Uršula Berlot & Sunčana Kuljiš Gaillot.

The titles of the compositions refer to the Latin names of various animal species living in the arctic: Vulpes lagopus (Arctic Fox), Somniosus microcephalus (Greenland Shark), Orcinus orca (Orca), Monodon monoceros (Narwhal) and Ursus maritimus ( Polar Bear). Perhaps a parallel exists between the beauty, innocence and fragility of a newborn baby girl and that of the flora and fauna present in the fragile Arctic ecosystems? Netherworld's answer is in the soundscapes of "Algida Bellezza". The cover photo was taken in Greenland by photographer Carsten Egevang for the Qimmeq project. The project aims to show the importance of the Greenland sled dog – both in present-day Greenland and in the past. Carsten Egevang participates in the project as a photographer with special focus on documenting the use of the sled dog in today’s Greenland. Greenland holds the Arctic’s largest remaining sled dog population and a globally unique traditional dog sled culture. But both the sled dog and the culture that goes with it are threatened with extinction. The dog population has been reduced from 31 000 dogs twenty years ago to a present low of less than 15 000 and the situation is growing worse. Decreasing sea-ice cover due to climate warming and competition from snowmobiles is held responsible for the present alarming situation.

MACHINEFABRIEK " Stillness Soundtracks II "

A cold wind blows through the middle piece, a reminder of the harshness of conditions at either pole. A CLOSER LISTEN

more reviews

The friendship and collaboration between Rutger Zuydervelt (Machinefabriek) and Alessandro Tedeschi (label founder of Glacial Movements), has been going on for several years now and it is constantly evolving. The Dutch artist, in addition to carrying out the graphic designs of all Glacial Movements' releases, is also part of the label’s catalog with the album "Stillness Soundtracks" released in April 2014. Almost 6 years from its publication, here is the new musical tale of the fantastic journey in Antarctica by Esther Kokmeijer. When Esther Kokmeijer asked Rutger Zuydervelt (aka Machinefabriek) to score the second installment of her ‘Stillness’ video series, he didn’t have to think twice. After all, when working on its first volume, the duo found out soon enough that the images of floating icebergs and desolate sea scapes were a perfect fit with Rutger’s glacial sounds (as heard on ‘Stillness Soundtracks’). For that first set, the score was quite lively and layered, as if the music was adding a narrative to the static imagery, suggesting that things were unfolding outside of the screen. For the second ‘Stillness’ installment, the focus is more on what can be seen within the frame – an attempt to capture the solemness of the images – to find beauty, but also sadness in the mesmerizing quality of Esther’s films. This makes ‘Stillness Soundtracks II’ a more sombre and subdued album and one that’s a fitting soundtrack to these alarming times with climate change being a more serious threat than ever. Esther Kokmeijer: “Stillness” depicts tranquil, gliding images of icescapes from the North and South Pole. I filmed these landscapes during my biannual visits to Antarctica as an expedition photographer. The meditative images invite reflection on the unparalleled beauty of this glacial ecology, which appears both vulnerable and resilient.”

Rutger Zuydervelt: Trained as a graphic designer, Rotterdam's Rutger Zuydervelt started releasing as Machinefabriek in 2004. In 2006 he released his first official full length album, 'Marijn', which was voted by the Wire as one of that years bests electronica albums. Since then, his discography has expended rapidly, releasing on international labels such as 12K, Staalpaat, Important, Experimedia, Type, Home Normal, Dekorder and Glacial Movements. His improvised live performances has seen stages across the globe, including Japan, Canada, Russia en Israel. Besides making albums and playing gigs, Zuydervelt regularly works with film makers and choreographers, as well as producing on installations.

Esther Kokmeijer is an artist, explorer, designer and photographer, currently residing in Rotterdam and working around the globe. From 1996 until 2001 she studied graphic design at the ArtEZ Institute of the Arts. Between 2001 and 2008 she managed her own design studio, besides working as a (travel) photographer for magazines and newspapers. Since 2008 she has worked as an independent artist. For some of her projects she collaborates with scientists and other professionals. In 2013 she studied Arctic and Antarctic Science, a minor at the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen (RUG). Since 2013 she also seasonally works as an expedition photographer and polar guide, sailing to the Arctic during the Arctic summer and to Antarctica during the Antarctic summer. Kokmeijer's work has been exhibited and published worldwide. For various projects, she had visited 84 countries. Furthermore, she has participated in art residency programs in The Netherlands, Indonesia, South Korea, Greenland, Antarctica, Spitsbergen, Germany, France, Mongolia, and China.

Brock Van Wey, aka bvdub, is undoubtedly among the greatest and most prolific artists in the world, whose music directly affects the heart, soul, and human mind. His soundscapes spread in the air as if they were delicate and slow movements of the northern lights, or the wind that blows on the flowers of the trees in spring. There is something divine in bvdub's music, and Glacial Movements is more than honored to welcome another great work for the world, Ten Times the World Lied, his fifth album on the Roman label, as he nears forty overall. Ten songs impossible to describe in words, but which will breach the heart of all those who lose themselves in this sonic wonder. Completely devoid of vocals for the first time ever, Brock spins but layers upon layers of divine clouds, gradually darkening, gradually closing in - expertly mastered by the artist himself, culminating in arguably the best album he has composed for Glacial Movements to date.

CHIHEI HATAKEYAMA & DIRK SERRIES " Black Frost "

Formado por cuatro nuevas piezas, el "ambient nórdico" que promueven desde el sello romano. CLUBBING SPAIN

more reviews

Four years after their initial collaborative debut, Chihei and Dirk return with a 2nd album that clearly solidifies their unique blend of ‘The Storm Of Silence’. An album that received worldwide praise. ‘Black Frost’ is that follow-up that expands their duo sound, made with electric guitars and various electronics,. Four new pieces embracing the Nordic theme of Glacial Movements once again : that of a secluded place equally desolate and beautiful. This is where Chihei Hatakeyama & Dirk Serries excel in.

The Belgian-based artist Dirk Serries has experimented with ambient music for 30 years. He released his earliest work behind the pseudonym vidnaObmana up to 2007 when he closed the book on this project (realizing an extensive discography). Other projects like Fear Falls Burning and his ongoing Microphonics series made him collaborate with several key-players like Steven Wilson, Justin K. Broadrick, Cult Of Luna and toured extensively on the sides of Jesu, MONO, Low, My Bloody Valentine and others. In October 2013 Dirk Serries re-booted his classic vidnaObmana ambient sound from the mid eighties/early nineties with releasing 3 albums on limited edition 180 gram vinyl. The pieces are unedited, live run-throughs meant to fill up a side of a vinyl record, released on the boutique Tonefloat:Ikon imprint. These 3 LPs were followed by a few digital-only releases on the same imprint. This series is to be continued. Dirk Serries returned last year to Projekt Records with The Origin Reversal, a further exploration in re-enstating of his classic vidnaObmana sound. This is ambient music that flows from its discreet origins: sonic purity, washes of harmony, and organic textures which slow time to a phase of transcendence. Disorientation Flow is the recent follow-up.He currently runs the Tonefloat’s New Wave Of Jazz vinyl/cassette imprint dedicated to his fascination and ongoing explorations in improvisation and free-jazz.

Chihei Hatakeyama is a sound artist and musician living on the outskirts of Tokyo. He has performed for years under his given name and also as one half of the electroacoustic duo Opitope, along with Tomoyoshi Date. Hatakeyama polychromes memory-evoking soundscapes with various recorded materials of electric, acoustic instruments such as electric guitars, vibraphone and piano. His releases is on Kranky, Room 40, Under The Spire, Hibernate Records, Magic Book Records, Home Nomal, OwnRecords And Spekk (As Opitope).."

Aria Rostami & Daniel Blomquist " Still "

As deep as the ocean, and as slow as a huge ship in icy water. ARCANA FM

more reviews

Five years have passed since Glacial Movements published the wonderful "Wandering Eye" album by the duo Aria Rostami and Daniel Blomquist, whose themes focused on a description of the best places to observe space from the Antarctic Plateau. A further step forward is represented by "Still", whose purpose is to describe how time can change its motion in case of cold weather.

" "Still" consists of a few recordings done within our first year of collaborating (2015-2016) - the opening track was our first studio recording, everything we had done prior to that was strictly live. Throughout this project, we've tried a lot of different approaches and made a special effort for each record and each live show to make it feel different from the last. In that first year, we primarily aimed to make songs that were built over long periods of time - usually getting noisier and/or more intense - and this was how we had envisioned "our sound" at the time. This also means that songs that were more on the traditional ambient side didn't make the cut of our first record, "Wandering Eye". When Glacial Movements approached us about a second release, we went with a different direction and the songs we chose for "Still" captured a new spirit in our work that was originally left on the cutting room floor. As time went on, we started venturing into new ideas like experimental techno, noise, and more traditional compositions while the songs on "Still" sat like a time capsule. We released more music, expanding our sound, and "Still", which was originally slated for a 2018 release, got pushed back further as conflicts on release schedules came up. We could never have predicted what the world would have looked like in 2021 when this record will finally be released. Somehow, through elements of chance, "Still" is finally being released in a world that feels like it is on pause in so many ways. Most of the songs on "Still" change over time. They do not sound the same when they end as they did when they started. This change is subtle rather than grand and over time the songs become completely new. For the song and album titles, we were thinking about time slowing or stopping in cold weather - how life is on pause and how movement is difficult. The stillness feels more like a cocoon rather than a hibernation - there is something changing over time - and although we had no idea what a global pandemic or politics of today would look like when making this work, the world today completely recontextualizes the music and the delay in the release now feels appropriate. " Aria Rostami & Daniel Blomquist
